The named anchor consolidation technique refers to the use of an anchor tag "<a></a>" combined with the name attribute to consolidate page content to seemingly originate from ONE page. This also goes for any links that may arrive to any one of the pages using this technique. Clearly this can be abused, so it is important to use this only logically. For example, you may wish to consolidate the about us, contact us, legal disclaimer and support pages into one line reference on your 2nd tier pages, instead of giving each page a link (in the eyes of a search engine):
Traditional Use
http://www.filipecsantos.com/about-us.html
http://www.filipecsantos.com/contact-us.html
http://www.filipecsantos.com/legal.html
http://www.filipecsantos.com/support.html
Named Anchor Technique Use
http://www.filipecsantos.com/site-info.html#about-us
http://www.filipecsantos.com/site-info.html#contact-us
http://www.filipecsantos.com/site-info.html#legal
http://www.filipecsantos.com/site-info.html#support
All of these links above in the named anchor technique now appear as one single link, because the named symbol "#" refers to content anchors within a single page (as far as search engines see it). The one complexity to this is that you will require a method on the site to determine how to send the user to the right content. Typically Javascript can accomplish this with a snippet of code. Clearly this search engine optimization technique can help reduce the footprint of links within your website. allowing you to place more important emphasis on pages that matter to you and your business.
