Everyone's heard that content is king, but few know truly why that is. Content is the essence of the web. Why else would people visit websites or go online at all if they couldn't be entertained, taught or advanced in their tasks? Content comes in many forms: there's text, video, images, sound and rich media. Each content type has a bearing on what users find intriguing or not, as does the execution of that content. Badly developed content is still going to be lesser regarded by people (users) than good content - but in spaces where information is scarce, the availability of any information (even bad) is still going to likely drive a lot of attention.
Each content piece (a webpage or recognized and readable asset online like a PDF - in the case of search engines) allows for yet another entry point into a website. And each page added to the website in turn (with proper site navigation and IA) will help to generate a higher value placed on it by search engines. While this content value can be negligible at first, over time once the pages and recognized and indexed properly, they will add value to a website in the view of a search engine.
So the aspiration for all serious business owners, SEO's and website operators should be to develop unique quality content both to have higher visitor loyalty and to increase their visibility in search marketing via SEO. While your site may be a molehill now, with practice and an eye on focusing analytics and visit stats to develop new content, you should be well on your way to building a mountain of an online property.
